AT VESPERS ON SUNDAY EVENING
Kathisma Reading
There are no appointed psalms to be chanted tonight.
At Psalm 140
Tone 2
If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.
О supremely good Father, Son and Word of the Father, and Holy Spirit, uncreated Essence,* who are possessed of a wellspring of tender compassion and pour forth depths of mercy:* accept our supplication and prayer,* granting forgiveness to all amid their transgressions,* in that You are compassionate and the Lover of mankind.
I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.
As You are God, You are by nature wholly compassionate, merciful, and good;* therefore, we beseech You, О Christ our Saviour,* and falling down before You, we cry, ever calling out to You:* Grant to Your servants remission of their many transgressions* and forgiveness of every thing wherein they have committed offenses,* in that You are the compassionate God and the Lover of mankind.
From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.
Desiring to save all for whose sake You had become a man, О Saviour,* as God You manifested Yourself as a man.* Save us who bow down before Your commandments,* for You did not come to save the righteous,* but through the grace of divine baptism* to loose us who are bound by many sins in the chains of our transgressions, О Lover of mankind,* in that You are compassionate and the Lover of mankind.
Tone 2, Podoben: “When from the Tree”
For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.
The spiritual splendour of your mind, * O most wondrous prophet, * has disclosed a purity * which shines clearly like a mirror, * illumining the world with the brilliant radiance * of divine knowledge. * And prefiguring images of the divine mysteries, * it causes grace to be bestowed * upon all mankind.
Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.
As the mouth of God, * following righteous teachings and divine judgments, * you manifestly denounced the doers of iniquity, * condemning them with an inescapable sentence, * O most noetically rich prophet. * Wherefore, seeing the fulfillment of your most wise words, O blessed one, * we praise you with hymns, as is meet.
Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.
Standing before the throne of the Master * filled with light, and ineffable and divine glory, * and beholding the good things of heaven, * O divinely eloquent Amos, * be you mindful of all who honour you with faith, * asking that salvation of soul and forgiveness of sins * be granted unto them all, * O you who are acceptable to God.
Tone 2, Glory… Now…
With thrice-holy voices, О most pure one,* the multitude of your Son’s angels hymn you,* who are ever His fiery throne, animate palace, and divine bridge leading to Him from the earth.* And together with the Archangel Gabriel they cry out to you:* Rejoice, О joyous one, for you have given birth to the Source of joy!
Prokeimenon, Tone 8
And now bless the Lord,* all you servants of the Lord.
verse: Who stand in the temple of the Lord, in the courtyards of the house of our God.
Aposticha
Tone 2
Like the prodigal son I have sinned against You, О Saviour.* Accept me who am penitent, О Father.* Have mercy on me, О God!
I have lifted up my eyes to You enthroned in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord our God until He has mercy on us.
With the cry of the publican I cry out to You, О Christ my Saviour:* Cleanse me as You did him,* and have mercy on me, О God!
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for we have been filled with shame; our soul is all too full of the mockery of the rich, of the contempt of the proud.
Having hated the pleasures of the earth,* the passion-bearers were granted the good things of heaven* and became fellow citizens with the angels.* By their supplications, О Lord, have mercy and save us.
Tone 2, Glory… Now…
Rejoice, O Theotokos Mary,* indestructible and surpassingly holy temple;* as the prophet cries out:* Holy is your temple, wondrous in righteousness!
Troparion, Tone 2
As we celebrate the memory of Your prophet, Amos,* O Lord, we beseech You through him: “Save our souls!”
Glory… Now…
O Mother of God, you are a fountain of mercy;* count us worthy of your compassion;* look upon a people who have sinned;* manifest your power as you always do.* Because of our trust in you, we cry out to you* as once did Gabriel, the commander of the angels.
