 AY EVENING\n\nAt Psalm 140\n\nTone 5\, Podoben “Rejoice\, O Life-bearing
Cross…”\n\nIf You mark iniquities\, Lord\, who can stand?* But with Y
ou forgiveness is that You may be revered.\n\nRejoice\, O Life-bearing Cro
ss\,* invincible victory of piety\, door to paradise\,* confirmation of th
e faithful\, rampart of the Church\,* by which corruption has been utterly
destroyed\,* the dominion of death trampled down\,* and we have been lift
ed up from earth to them that are in Heaven\,* invincible weapon\, contend
er against the demons\,* glory of the martyrs\, true adornment of the vene
rable\, haven of salvation\,* which grants the world great mercy.\n\nI hav
e waited for You as You have commanded\; my soul patiently relies on Your
promise\,* for it has trusted in the Lord.\n\nRejoice\, O Cross of the Lor
d\,* by which mankind has been loosed from the curse\,* all-honourable sta
ndard of joy which disperses the enemy in your exaltation\,* our helper\,
might of kings\,* strength of the righteous\, splendour of priests\,* whic
h\, when traced\, delivers from misfortune\,* staff of power whereby we ar
e tended\,* weapon of peace which the angels surround with fear\,* divine
glory of Christ who grants the world great mercy.\n\nFrom the morning watc
h until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.\n\nRejoice\, O guide of the b
lind\,* physician of the ailing\, resurrection of all the dead\,* which ha
s raised us up who had fallen into corruption\,* O precious Cross\, by whi
ch the curse was annulled and incorruption budded forth\,* and the earthly
have been deified\, and the devil utterly cast down!* Beholding you raise
d on high today in the hands of the high priest\,* we exalt Him that was e
xalted in your midst\,* and bow down before you\,* plenteously drawing for
th from you great mercy.\n\nTone 1\, “Joy of the ranks of Heaven…”\n
\nFor with the Lord there is mercy\, and with Him there is plentiful redem
ption\;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.\n\nArrayed in
the armour of piety\,* you were shown to be a champion of Christ\, the Ki
ng of all\, O passion-bearer Nicetas\,* as was almighty Gideon of old\, se
tting at nought legions of aliens* by your noble boldness.\n\nPraise the L
ord\, all the nations\;* proclaim His glory\, all you people.\n\nThat whic
h is alien you enslaved by your all-powerful faith in Christ\,* O divinely
wise martyr who endured suffering.* Therefore\, you turned the barbarians
to the Creator and Master of all\, O wise one\,* and they glorify Him pio
usly.\n\nStrong is the love of the Lord for us\;* eternally will His truth
endure.\n\nO martyr\, the first-fruits of the barbarians\, dying for the
Trinity\,* brought glory to Christ\,* and were shown to be a divinely eloq
uent sufferer.* Therefore\, you have manifestly received a crown\,* and sh
ine with splendour in the world like a beacon\,* O right glorious one.\n\n
 Tone 6\, Glory…\n\nWe know you as a lamp to the martyrs\, O Nicetas\, su
fferer for Christ\,* for\, having forsaken the glory of earthly rank* and
despised the godlessness of your father\,* you shattered his gods\, triump
hantly put the barbarians to shame\,* underwent martyrdom for confessing C
hrist\,* and were a warrior of the God of Heaven.* Entreat the Benefactor
of all in our behalf\,* that He take pity and save our souls.\n\nNow…\n\
nThe voices of the prophets foretold the holy Tree* by which Adam was loos
ed from the ancient curse of death\,* and creation raises a cry to that wh
ich today is exalted\,* begging great mercy of God.* O Master\, who alone
are boundless in lovingkindness:* be our cleansing and save our souls!\n\n
 Great Prokeimenon\, Tone 7\n\nBut our God is in the heavens and on earth\;
 * He does whatever He wills.\n\nverse: When Israel came forth from Egypt\;
Jacob’s sons from an alien people.\n\nverse: The sea fled at the sight\
; the Jordan turned back on its course.\n\nverse: Why was it\, sea\, that
you fled\; that you turned back\, Jordan\, on your course?\n\nAposticha\n\
nTone 6\, Podoben “Having set all aside…”\n\nRaised on high\, the Cr
oss exhorts all creation* to hymn the all-pure Passion of Him that was lif
ted up thereon.* For thereon having slain him that slew us\,* in that He i
s merciful\, He gave life to the dead\,* and in the exceeding greatness of
His goodness* He has made them beautiful and vouchsafed them to live in t
he heavens.* Therefore\, rejoicing\, we exalt His name\,* and magnify His
extreme condescension.\n\nExalt the Lord our God\, and worship the footsto
ol of His feet\; for He is holy.\n\nMoses prefigured You\, stretching fort
h his arms on high\,* and vanquished the tyrant Amalek\, O precious Cross\
,* boast of the faithful\, confirmation of sufferers\,* saviour of all the
venerable.* Therefore\, creation\, beholding you lifted up\, is gladdened
\,* and keeps festival\, glorifying Christ\,* who through you has gathered
the dispersed* in His extreme goodness.\n\nGod is our King before the age
s\, He has wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.\n\nO most precious
Cross\, who are today exalted\,* and about whom the ranks of angels stand
in gladness\,* by divine command you uplift all* who for the stealing of
the fruit were driven out and were sunk in death.* Therefore\, we\, the fa
ithful\, venerating you with hearts and lips\,* derive from you sanctifica
tion\,* crying out: Exalt Christ\, the all-good God\,* and worship His div
ine footstool.\n\nTone 8\, Glory…\n\nYou showed yourself to be the names
ake of victory\, O most honoured martyr Nicetas\;* proclaiming Christ our
God amid your struggle\,* you confessed Him before kings and tormentors.*
Therefore\, never cease in your prayers to Him that alone loves mankind\,*
in behalf of the world\, for Christ-loving kings\,* and for all that fait
hfully keep your memory\,* that He deliver them from all wrath.\n\nNow…\
n\nO God\, the cry of the prophet Moses has been fulfilled\,* who cried: B
ehold your life which is raised up before your eyes!* Today the Cross is u
plifted\, and the world is freed from deception.* Today the Resurrection o
f Christ is renewed\,* and the ends of the earth rejoice\,* offering a hym
n to You\, and saying like David:* You have wrought salvation in the midst
of the earth\, O God\,* and the Cross and Resurrection\,* for whose sake
You have saved us\, good Lover of Mankind.* O Almighty Lord\, glory to You
!\n\nTroparia\n\nTone 4\n\nTaking up the Cross of Christ ardently\, as it
