VESPERS ON FRIDAY EVENING
Kathisma Reading
The appointed psalms are chanted.
At Psalm 140
Tone 1
If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.
Illumining the whole world with rays of miracles,* O Cyrus and John, all radiant beacons,* you were like to the heavens in grace,* displaying like stars* the virtues of your exalted life.
I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.
Illumining the whole world with rays of miracles,* O Cyrus and John, all radiant beacons,* you were like to the heavens in grace,* displaying like stars* the virtues of your exalted life.
From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.
O martyrs of the Lord, O rain-bearing clouds* who excelled in manifold miracles of grace,* you water the whole world noetically,* prevailing upon the healthy* to offer hymnody to God.
For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.
Truly receiving from God the skill to heal the sufferings of soul and body,* O martyrs of the Lord, you supernaturally heal all* not by means of human medicines,* but by the inspiration of God.
Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.
Surrounded by the hosts of heaven,* O radiant luminaries Cyrus and John, O valiant athletes,* you heal the bodies of those on earth and wounded souls for Christ’s sake.* Entreat Him, that He save us.
Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.
Following Christ, the Fountain of glory,* you have been shown to all as wellsprings of immortality,* and pour forth sweet streams which cure and heal men’s bodies and souls;* for you zealously shed streams of blood for Christ.
Tone 8, Glory…
Two martyrs have shone forth upon us today, healing the pangs of our souls:* Cyrus and John, the wonder-workers.* The one, embracing the angelic life and living it to the end,* united himself to Christ by the blood of martyrdom;* and the other, shining forth among the military ranks,* is now enrolled in the armies of heaven.* Wherefore, they impart healing to those who with faith celebrate their memory,* praying for our souls.
Glory… Now…
Out of his love for mankind* the King of heaven appeared on earth and dwelled with men,* for He assumed a human body from the pure Virgin* and was seen in the flesh He received from her.* He is the One and only God* having two natures but not two persons.* Therefore we profess and declare the truth* that Christ our God is perfect God and perfect Man.* O Mother, who knew not carnal union,* intercede with Him that He may have mercy on our souls.
Prokeimenon
Tone 7
O God, You are my defender* and Your mercy goes before me.
verse: Deliver me from my enemies, O God; save me from those who rise up against me.
Aposticha
Tone 8
O martyrs of the Lord,* we beseech you to offer intercession before our God:* pray that abundant mercy be granted to our souls* and the forgiveness of our many sins.
Blessed are they whom You have chosen* and taken to Yourself, О Lord.
I lament and weep whenever I see death* and look upon our beauty, fashioned according to God’s image,* lying in the grave disfigured and inglorious,* its outward form destroyed.* O strange wonder! What mystery is this that concerns us?* How have we been delivered over to corruption?* How have we been conjoined to death?* All this, so it is written, is by the ordinance of God,* who doth grant rest to the departed.
Their souls shall dwell* among good things.
Your death, O Lord, has enabled us to be immortal.* For had You not been laid in the tomb,* Paradise had not been opened.* Therefore grant rest to the departed* as You are the Lover of mankind.
Tone 2, Glory…
Come, O assembly of the faithful,* and with hymns let us crown Cyrus and John today:* the soldiers of grace and most generous fulfillers of petitions;* for in manifold ways they have been shown to all as most splendid physicians.* Wherefore, they pray for our souls.
Now…
When iniquitous men raised You, the Life of all, up upon the Tree, О Saviour,* Your pure and most immaculate Mother,* standing forth and lamenting, exclaimed:* “O my sweet Child, light of my eyes, woe is me!* How have You suffered to be nailed to the Cross between two evildoers,* О You who have suspended the earth upon the waters?”
Troparia
Tone 5
Christ our God, You have granted us the miracles of Your holy martyrs, Cyrus and John,* as a stronghold and protection.* Through their prayers, strengthen those in authority in every good deed,* for You alone are merciful and the Lover of mankind!
Glory… Now…
O Mother of God, the mysteries which surround you are exceedingly glorious* and beyond the power of understanding.* For you retained the seal of purity,* and your virginity remained inviolate;* yet you are acknowledged, without doubt,* to be the Mother who gave birth to the true God.* We beg you, therefore, to entreat Him to save our souls.
