VESPERS ON MONDAY NIGHT

Kathisma Reading

The appointed psalms are chanted.

At Psalm 140

Tone 1

If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

Now all peoples have been renewed by God’s exalted deeds,* for by means of tongues in the likeness of fire,* all those who dwell on earth have been brought to the faith,* and that this sign to the nations,* has declared that salvation is truly in our midst.

I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

Having fulfilled Your promise to send down power from on high* to Your disciples, O Christ,* You sent Your Holy Spirit,* thereby showing us that You are Truth,* and that those who hope in You, O Good One,* shall in no wise ever be ashamed.

From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

At the time that was appointed, You sent into the world the Holy Spirit,* who came in the form of tongues of fire.* All our sins are cleansed by this heavenly fire.* Thereby, You have granted us a true communion with Him,* for in pious faith we proclaim Him* to be perfect God.

Tone 4

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Elevated above earthly things by your active purifications* like an animate cloud, O most blessed one,* you cast down the perverse serpent with the thunder-claps of your miracles* and the awesome lightning flashes of your words,* and you received the grace to burn up the bowels of the adverse carnal serpents* with the divine covering of the sacred Gifts.

Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

O holy hierarch Timothy, boast of the people of Prussia,* universal champion and beacon of the world,* adornment of the Church, sacred sacrifice of faith,* and precious and lustrous ornament of the martyrs:* pray that those who celebrate your most honoured memory with faith* may be delivered from corruption and misfortunes.

Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

With your pangs, O Timothy,* you wove an all-comely garment dyed in your blood,* and have ineffably received from on high* heavenly vesture of incorrupt purity and immutable life.* Wearing this immaterial robe in the highest,* pray in behalf of all who praise you with piety, O athlete.

Tone 1, Glory… Now…

We celebrate Pentecost and the coming of the Spirit,* and the time appointed for the promise, and the fulfillment of hope.* How great is this mystery:* it is both exceeding great and most venerable.* Wherefore, we cry to You:* O Creator of all, Lord, glory be to You.

Prokeimenon, Tone 4

The Lord hears me* when I cry out to Him.

verse: Whenever I called, the God of my justice heard me.

Aposticha

Tone 2

O Word, You sent forth, according to Your promise, the Spirit, who is true God,* that He might dwell among Your disciples* and enlighten them.

Create in me a clean heart, O God,* and renew a right spirit within me.

Suddenly, from on high, the Comforter’s great power* showed forth the Words of the Apostles’ as all-wise theologians* who spoke of things divine.

Cast me not away from Your presence,* and take not Your Holy Spirit from me

Foreigners stood amazed,* upon hearing the Apostles speak in every tongue,* glorifying and magnifying God the Trinity.

Tone 1, Glory… Now…

You have renewed Your disciples with foreign tongues, O Christ,* that they might therewith proclaim You, the immortal Word and God,* who grants our souls great mercy.

Troparion

Tone 4

Having shared the way of life of the apostles,* and having become a successor to their thrones,* labouring you found the divinely inspired way to contemplation.* Therefore, forthrightly ministering the word of truth,* you shed your blood for the faith, O hieromartyr, Timothy.* Intercede with Christ our God for the salvation of our souls.

Tone 8, Glory… Now…

Blessed are You, O Christ our God who revealed the fishermen as most wise* by sending them the Holy Spirit;* through them You caught the entire world.* Loving Master, glory to You.

Hymn to the Mother of God

O my soul, magnify the one Divinity in three Persons.

And the Irmos: Rejoice, O Queen, boast of the virgins and mothers, for every tongue, though capable and eloquent, cannot hymn you as is your due, and every mind is confounded in seeking to comprehend the way in which you gave birth. Therefore with one accord we glorify you.

Communion Hymn

Your good Spirit will lead me* to the land of righteousness.* Alleluia, alleluia,* alleluia. (Psalm 142:10)
