cross\, O Christ\,* You have put the Devil to shame.* With Your resurrecti
on You have deadened the sting of sin\,* and have saved us from the gates
 of death.* We\, therefore\, glorify You\, O only-begotten Son of God.\n\nT
he just shall gather around me* when You have been good to me.\n\nO Christ
\, who granted resurrection to mankind\,* You were led like a lamb to the
slaughter.* Then the princes of Hades were struck with terror* as they saw
the gates of their tearful domain being lifted up\;* for Christ\, the Kin
g of Glory\, entered therein* and exclaimed to those in chains: Go forth f
rom here!* And to those in darkness: Go forth into the light!\n\nOut of th
 e depths I cry to You\, O Lord\;* O Lord\, hear my voice!\n\nWhat a great
wonder!* The Creator of invisible beings suffered in the flesh for mankind
\,* and rose from the dead as immortal.* Come\, therefore\, all you nation
s and adore Him\;* for through His compassion we have been freed from the
snares of the Devil\,* and we have learned to praise the one God in three
Persons.\n\nLet Your ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.\n\nWe o
ffer to You our evening worship\,* O Light whom the darkness of night can
never extinguish.* For in these latter days Your radiance has appeared to
the world\,* shining in Your flesh as light reflected from a mirror.* Your
brilliance has descended even to the depths of Hades and dissolved its gl
oom.* O Lord\, Giver of Light\, glory to You\;* for You have shown the rad
iance of Your resurrection to all the nations.\n\nTone 4\, Podoben “Call
ed from on high…”\n\nIf You mark iniquities\, Lord\, who can stand?* B
ut with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.\n\nYou are the divine
mediator between the old and new testaments\,* the prophet and forerunner\
,* an angel in the flesh\, the denouncer of lawlessness\,* offspring of th
e womb of a barren woman\,* a mouth breathing fire:* You upbraided Herod w
ho committed iniquity.* Unable to endure your denunciation\,* he commanded
that your head be cut off!* It was brought in on a platter\;* but like fo
od of abstinence and divine delight\,* it continued to denounce the adulte
rer!\n\nI have waited for You as You have commanded\; my soul patiently re
lies on Your promise\,* for it has trusted in the Lord.\n\nIncited by her
evil mother\,* the depraved daughter asked for your all-glorious head\,* t
he head that is cherished by the angels!* For she was unable to endure you
r denunciation.* Therefore\, bearing it on a platter and dancing as she ca
rried it\,* she turned the joy of those at the banquet into lamentation.*
Yet you continued to denounce the evil of adultery\, blessed one.* Entreat
Christ that our souls may be saved!\n\nFrom the morning watch until night
 * let Israel trust in the Lord.\n\nMade foolish by drunkenness\,* Herod wa
s carried away by adultery and voices carolling in song!* In fulfilment of
his unrighteous oath\,* he caused your murder\, righteous and glorious pr
ophet.* But your death openly announced immortality to those who had died
before\,* for you became a preacher and herald for those in hell\,* procla
iming the saving coming of Christ our God!* Entreat Him that He may save a
nd enlighten our souls!\n\nTone 1\, Podoben “O most lauded martyrs…”
\n\nFor with the Lord there is mercy\, and with Him there is plentiful red
emption\;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.\n\nMost ble
ssed Alexander\,* you were a shepherd of the Church\;* a champion of ortho
doxy wisely casting down the Arian heresy!* You prayed with supplications\
, all-wise and glorious one\,* that his wickedness be cast out of the Chur
ch!* Therefore\, together we honour you!\n\nPraise the Lord\, all the nati
ons\;* proclaim His glory\, all you people.\n\nHonourable John\,* you disd
ained the corruption of the flesh\,* and in your abstinence and faith\, vi
gilance and confession\,* you were found to be an earthly angel and heaven
ly man!* Entreat Christ that He may grant our souls great mercy!\n\nStrong
is the love of the Lord for us\;* eternally will His truth endure.\n\nYou
truly submitted to the divine teachings of your namesake!* You hastened t
o the heights of the virtues\,* as to the third heaven\, glorious one!* Yo
u heard the ineffable and divine words of the Spirit!* As an unshakable fo
undation of the Orthodox\,* by your prayers may the Saviour be merciful to
  us!\n\nTone 6\, Glory…\n\nAgain Herodias rages insanely\, again is she
vexed.* O what deceitful dancing\, what a feast of deception!* The Baptist
is beheaded\, and Herod is troubled.* Through the supplications of Your f
 orerunner\, O Lord\,* grant peace to our souls.\n\nTone 5\, Now…\n\nA sy
mbol of the undefiled Virgin and bride* was revealed in the Red Sea.* Ther
e\, Moses divided the waters\;* here\, Gabriel is the messenger of the mir
acle.* There\, the Israelites crossed the deep and their feet were not eve
n wet\;* here\, the Virgin gives birth to Christ without human seed.* Ther
e\, the sea remained uncrossed after the passing of Israel\;* here\, the i
mmaculate remained incorrupt after giving birth to Emmanuel.* Therefore\,
O immortal God\, who appeared in the flesh as true Man\,* have mercy on us
!\n\nAposticha\n\nTone 5\n\nO Christ our Saviour\,* we lift up our voices
in song to glorify You.* For\, in Your love for mankind\,* You became inca
rnate without leaving heaven\;* You accepted the cross and death\;* You ca
st down the gates of Hades\;* and on the third day You arose from the dead
 * for the salvation of our souls.\n\nThe Lord reigns\, He is clothed in ma
jesty. Robed is the Lord\, and girt about with strength.\n\nO Giver of Lif
e\,* streams of forgiveness\, life\, and salvation* poured forth from Your
pierced side upon us all.* By accepting physical death\, You granted us i
mmortality\;* by lying in the tomb\, You freed us from Hades\,* and as God
\, by rising from the dead\,* You raised us with Yourself in glory.* There
fore\, we cry out to You:* O Lover of mankind\, glory to You!\n\nFor He ha
s made the world firm\, which shall not be moved.\n\nO Lover of mankind\,*
Your crucifixion and descent into Hades are most wondrous.* For\, as God\
, You thereby conquered the power of Hades\,* and raised up in glory\, wit
h Yourself\, those who were long imprisoned there.* You reopened Paradise
and enabled them to enter.* Grant forgiveness of sins to us* who glorify Y

King.* Christ\, our Redeemer and Lord\,* appeared through you to those who
slumbered in darkness.* For He\, as the Sun of Righteousness\,* wished to
enlighten those whom He created with His own hands* according to His own
image.* Therefore\, O Lady\, whom we always praise in song\,* we beseech y
ou to intercede with Christ for the salvation of our souls\;* for\, as His
Mother\, you can approach Him with the greatest confidence.\n\nTroparia\n
\nTone 5\n\nLet us the faithful acclaim and worship the Word\,* co-eternal

\nO Mother of God\, the mystery hidden from all eternity* and unknown even
to the angels\,* was revealed through you to those on earth:* God took on
our human nature* and united it to His divine nature in a perfect but unc
