VESPERS ON TUESDAY EVENING

Kathisma Reading

The appointed psalms are chanted.

At Psalm 140 Tone 4, Podoben “As one valiant among the martyrs…”

If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

You traversed the narrow path with untroubled spirit,* sailing to those things which lead to life;* for you were the boast of fasters, O Euthymius,* having steadfastly set at naught the pursuit of the demons.* Therefore, you have been counted worthy to be an heir to the heavenly kingdom,* and you delight in never-ending beauty.

I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

Your most radiant life astonished the angels* and manifestly affrighted the savage demons;* you have splendidly adorned the assemblies of the faithful,* ever commanding them to go to the heavenly dwelling place of Christ.* Entreat Him that they that celebrate your most honoured memory with faith* be delivered from corruption and misfortunes.

From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

Hymnody and praise did you bring to Christ every day, O father, while dwelling in the desert;* and offering up your soul and mind to the one God,* like the great Moses you ascended to the impassable heights of sanctity.* Therefore, having vanquished the invisible foe,* you became a pure habitation and an instrument of the divine Spirit.

Tone 4, Podoben “You have given a sign…”

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

You made the faithful steadfast, enriching them with faith* and the discourse of knowledge of God,* that they might boldly endure the rage of the tyrant* for the sake of the life which is to come and incorruptible.* Therefore, we call you blessed, O right glorious Lucian,* and we celebrate your divine solemnity today.

Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Lengthy imprisonment and a most violent death you endured, O venerable one,* bound with bonds, lacerated with sharp-edged shards, O blessed one,* and weakened by cruel starvation and by long thirst.* Therefore, you have manifestly received heavenly food* and been made an invincible martyr, O valiant athlete.

Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

The bosom of the sea, receiving you, O glorious one,* gave you over to the dry land after thirty days,* like Jonah of old, through the agency of wild beasts, for divinely honourable interment, a divine wellspring of healings,* princely election of martyrs, establishment of the Church, intercession for our souls,* God-bearer most rich.

Tone 6, Glory…

O venerable father, word of your corrections has gone forth into all the earth;* therefore, you have found the reward of your labours in the heavens,*have destroyed the legions of the demons, and attained to the ranks of the angels,* whose life you blamelessly emulated.* Possessed of boldness before Christ God, ask peace for our souls.

Now…

Beholding You crucified, O Christ, she that gave birth to You cried out:* What is this strange mystery which I see, O my Son?* How is it that You die, suspended on the Cross in the flesh,* a Giver of life?

Prokeimenon, Tone 1

Your mercy, O Lord, shall follow me* all the days of my life.

verse: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. In green pastures He gives me repose.

Aposticha

Tone 1

The Cross was set up on Golgotha,* and has blossomed forth immortality for us from the ever-flowing fountain* of the Saviour’s side.

I have lifted up my eyes to You enthroned in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord our God until He has mercy on us.

The precious Cross of the Saviour is for us an indestructible rampart;* for, placing our trust therein,* we all are saved.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for we have been filled with shame; our soul is all too full of the mockery of the rich, of the contempt of the proud.

О how good was your barter, О saints!* For you traded your blood and inherited heavenly things;* and having undergone trials for a time, you rejoice everlastingly.* Of a truth your commerce was good!* For, having forsaken corruptible things, you received those things which were incorrupt;* and joining chorus with the angels, you unceasingly hymn* the consubstantial Trinity.

Tone 5, Glory…

O venerable father, you gave no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids,* until you freed your soul and body of the passions* and had prepared yourself as a habitation of the Spirit;* for Christ, coming with the Father, made His dwelling within you,* and you became a favourite of the consubstantial Trinity.* O great preacher Euthymius, pray in behalf of our souls.

Now…

The ewe-lamb, once beholding her Lamb hastening to the slaughter,* diligently followed, crying out these things to Him:* To where do You go, O Christ, my Child most sweet?* Why do You unflaggingly run this rapid course, O Longsuffering One?* O sinless Jesus, who are most desired, most merciful Lord,* grant a word to me Your handmaid, O my most beloved Son!* Pass not by me in silence who gave birth to You in strange manner, O all-compassionate God,* granting the world great mercy!

Troparia

Tone 8

In you, O holy father Euthymius,* the faithful image of God shone forth,* for you carried your cross and followed Christ.* You taught by your deeds how to spurn the body, for it passes away;* and how to value the soul, for it is immortal.* Therefore, your soul is forever in happiness with the angels.

Tone 4, Glory…

You kept yourself chaste by your fasting,* and you received an untarnishing crown by your martyrdom.* O martyred priest, Lucian, the pride of Antioch,* beg Christ to save us who keep your holy memory.

Now…

O Virgin, all immaculate Mother of Christ God,* a sword pierced your all-holy soul* when you saw your Son and God willingly crucified.* Therefore, O blessed One,* never cease to pray to Him* that He may grant us forgiveness of our sins.
