Blessed is the man… is chanted.

At Psalm 140

Tone 1, Podoben “Joy of the ranks of heaven…”

Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

O all-compassionate Word,* You carried Elias the Tishbite away from the earth in a chariot of fire.* Through his intercession* save us who faithfully glorify You* and who joyously commemorate his feast.

Let Your ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

O all-compassionate Word,* You carried Elias the Tishbite away from the earth in a chariot of fire.* Through his intercession* save us who faithfully glorify You* and who joyously commemorate his feast.

If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

O blessed Elias,* you encountered God not in an earthquake but in the coolness of a gentle breeze.* O God-inspired one, you went up to heaven in a wondrous way,* on a chariot drawn by four horses.* Thus you became a marvel to all of us.

I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

O blessed Elias,* you encountered God not in an earthquake but in the coolness of a gentle breeze.* O God-inspired one, you went up to heaven in a wondrous way,* on a chariot drawn by four horses.* Thus you became a marvel to all of us.

From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

O all-wise Elias,* in your burning zeal for God,* you slew the shameful priests with a sword.* With the word of your mouth you dried up the clouds* so that it would not rain.* You perfected Elisha by the gift of your mantle,* filling him with heavenly graces.

Tone 2

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

The two lampstands, Elias and Elisha,* illuminated the whole world.* One prevented raindrops from heaven,* reproved the king, and rose into heaven on a fiery chariot.* The other healed the barren waters,* and having received the two-fold grace,* divided the waters of the Jordan.* Now they sing with the angels* and pray for the salvation of our souls.

Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

The fiery chariot took you up to heaven as in a whirlwind.* O Elias the Tishbite,* God graced you with a fiery zeal of miracles.* You were created incorruptible,* so that you might not see death* until you knew beforehand the death of everyone.* Therefore, come and grant us a warning of your great accomplishments.

Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

O Prophet Elias, O lampstand of the Church which has no evening,* having been inflamed with divine zeal,* you closed up the rain from heaven;* you were fed by a raven;* you reproved the king and put the priests to death;* you commanded fire from heaven and slew two captains;* you provided abundantly for the widow by means of a little oil* and a small handful of meal;* you resurrected her son by your prayer;* you ignited the fire in water;* you crossed over the currents of the Jordan on foot.* Indeed, you were raised up to heaven by a fiery chariot.* You gave a two-fold grace to Elisha.* Pray unceasingly to God for the salvation of our souls.

Tone 6, Glory…

Come, let us assemble, all you people of God,* in this holy place where we are to honour the two God-inspired Prophets.* Let us sing a special hymn of praise* to the glory of Christ God who chose them.* Let us cry out in joy, saying:* Rejoice, O earthly angel and heavenly man, Elias the Great.* Rejoice, O precious Elisha whom God has filled with the graces of heaven.* Rejoice, O fervent intercessors and mediators,* healers of the souls and bodies of the faithful who love Christ.* Deliver from the attacks of the enemy and from every danger* all those who celebrate your memory with honour.

Now…

Who would not bless you, O most holy Virgin?* Who would not praise the most pure manner in which you gave birth?* For the Only-begotten Son, Who proceeds eternally from the Father, came forth from you.* He took flesh from you in a manner that is beyond understanding.* He, Who by nature is God, took on our nature for our sake.* Yet He did not become divided into two persons;* rather, He remained one Person with two distinct and unconfused natures.* O most pure Lady, we implore you:* Beseech your Son and God to have mercy on our souls.

Tone 4

You are a partaker, O blessed Prophet,* of the incorruptible company of God my Saviour.* Having divided the Jordan by prayer,* you crossed over on dry ground.* After leaving a two-fold grace for Elisha,* you were taken up into heaven on a fiery chariot.* Therefore, we beseech you,* although you were taken up from us in the flesh,* do not separate yourself from us in spirit,* and always pray to Christ that our souls may be saved.

O heavenly Prophet, you appeared as a shining cloud,* raining a shower of an understanding of God to all the faithful.* Like a rich wine you filled with happiness* the faithful who were present in your most divine temple.* Therefore, we entreat you, O heavenly Prophet Elias who sees God,* grant our country victory over her enemies* and great mercy to our souls.

Having complete control of your mind,* you humbled your body, O heavenly Prophet Elias.* Thus you prepared for your divine ascension in your heart.* You reproved the unjust actions of the king;* you took away the curse of God’s anger;* and you destroyed the shameful priests with a sword.* You taught all to loudly cry out:* Truly Elias preaches the one true God.

Tone 6, Glory…

The disgraceful king commanded fasting in order to commit murder;* for after the fasting, blood was shed and the law was broken.* Naboth the Jezreelite was killed.* Then, O Prophet, you revealed the message of the Lord:* Since you killed the Jezreelite man unjustly,* likewise your blood will also be spilled and harlots will bathe in your blood.* O Lover of mankind, by the prayers of Your prophet and preacher,* deliver our souls from such inhumanity.

Now..

O Mother of God, you are the true vine laden with the fruit of life.* There, we implore you, O Lady,* to intercede together with the Apostles and the Saints* so that we may obtain mercy for our souls.

Aposticha

Tone 8

Having been illuminated by a brilliant mind,* Elias, the awesome Prophet, was heavenly in his actions.* He became indignant when he saw the unjust judgment of the infamous king.* Therefore, by God’s judgment, Elias denounced him.* Likewise, he delivered to God’s judgment the unmerciful queen who loved evil.* Now, O Christ, as the merciful One,* we ask You to save us by the prayers of Elias, Your Prophet.

Among His priests were Aaron and Moses; among those who invoked His name was Samuel.

O Prophet, you declared:* How long, O Lord, is the way of the infamous one to continue?* You planted and they became rooted* and produced the fruit of iniquity.* Indeed, they perished because of their shameful actions.* They cry out to You, but You will not hear.* Why have You shown me the scandal of the judges of the lawbreakers.

You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.

O great Elias, respected among the prophets,* your ascension is dear to those who celebrate.* By your prayers you deliver us from dangers and sorrows,* and you preserve us from the attacks of the Evil One.* O most glorious Prophet,* grant that we who are faithful followers of Christ* may always venerate you and bless you.

Tone 6, Glory…

O Prophet who foretold the coming of Christ,* you are forever in the presence of God’s glory,* and you intercede for those who are suffering.* Since you serve the Majesty on High,* you bless the whole world and are glorified everywhere.* Now obtain for us the forgiveness of our sins.

Now…

Christ the Lord, our Creator and Redeemer,* came forth from your womb, O most pure Virgin.* He clothed Himself in our human flesh* to set us free from the original curse of Adam.* Therefore, O Mary, we praise you, without ceasing,* as the true Virgin Mother of God,* and we sing with the angels:* Rejoice, O Lady, advocate, protector and salvation of our souls.

Troparia

Tone 4

The glorious Elias,* angelic in body, pillar of the prophets, second herald of Christ – * by sending grace upon Elisha from on high,* dispels disease, cleanses lepers, and overflows with healing for those who honour him. (2)

Rejoice, O Theotokos Virgin Mary, full of grace,* the Lord is with you!* Blessed are you among women,* And blessed is the Fruit of your womb.* For you have borne Christ* the Saviour and Deliverer of our souls.

Canon, Tone 2

First Canon of the Saint

Ode 1

Irmos: To the Lord, who of old guided the people in the midst of the sea,* and therein drowned Pharaoh and all his army,* let us chant a hymn of victory,* for He has been glorified.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

Desiring to behold the fiery power of the miracles of Elias, his fiery and honoured tongue and strength of spirit, we have assembled as is meet.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

O God-bearer, open our lips and the muteness and lack of skill of our tongue through the activity of the Spirit which is within you, and illumine us, that we may be able to hymn your wonders.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

Grant that which transcends nature to them that have submitted to Your honoured precepts, O Word, and make the portals of the rain subject to them through the Spirit, confirming their word.

O most holy Theotokos, save us!

To the Lord who was born of the Virgin and who has renewed the world, and who for her sake has bestowed upon us life divine, we chant a hymn of victory, for He has been glorified.

Katavasia: I shall open my mouth, and the Spirit will inspire it,* and I shall utter the words of my song to the Queen and Mother:* I shall be seen radiantly keeping feast* and joyfully praising her wonders.

Ode 3

Irmos: Having established me upon the rock of faith,* You have enlarged my mouth over my enemies,* for my spirit rejoices when it sings: There is none holy as our God,* and none righteous save You, O Lord!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

He, that alone sustains every living thing by His good will, though a raven provided you with a banquet as a chosen guest, O Prophet. To Him do we all cry out: You are our God, and there is none holy save You, O Lord!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

Grace be to the Benefactor and Guardian who, in His ineffable providence, nourished the widow and the prophet. To Him do we all cry out: You are our God, and none is holy save You, O Lord!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

O you that forbade the rain-laden clouds to pour forth, when the widow of Zarephath was deprived of food, you caused the remnant of her food to increase continually; and you cried out: None is holy save You, O Lord!

O most holy Theotokos, save us!

You alone, surpassing all of ages past; have been vouchsafed great things transcending nature, for you received the infinite God of all creation within your womb and gave Him flesh. Therefore, we all honour you as the Theotokos.

Katavasia: O Mother of God, living and plentiful fount,* give strength to those united in spiritual fellowship,* who sing hymns of praise to you:* and in your divine glory vouchsafe unto them crowns of glory.

Small Litany

Sessional Hymn

Tone 8, Podoben “Of the wisdom…”

Ye faithful, with hymns let us all praise Elias the Tishbite, the wellspring of miracles and adornment of prophets; for, being immortal while yet in the flesh, as a mortal he assureth us of the resurrection of the dead. Therefore, having boldness before God, he granteth healing to them that ask with faith, and earnestly beseecheth Christ to bestow remission of offenses upon them that with love celebrate his holy memory. (Twice)

Glory… Now…

Having fallen into subtle temptations through the activity of mine enemies, visible and invisible, I am caught fast in the tempest of my countless offenses. And I flee to the haven of thy goodness, as to my fervent help and protection, O pure one. Therefore, O most pure lady, earnestly entreat Him that was incarnate of thee without seed, in behalf of all thy servants that unceasingly pray to thee, O all-pure Theotokos, who dost ever beseech Him to grant remission of offenses to them that hymn thy glory as is meet.

Ode 4

Irmos: I have heard report, O Lord, of Your dispensation,* and have glorified You, O You who alone love mankind.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

You are shown to be one that cuts down evil at its root and a planter of virtue, O wise prophet. Therefore, we bless you.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

With words the widow who fed you upbraided you for the death of her son, compelling you to raise him from the dead.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

You clearly signified the glory of the Trinity with your threefold breathing, and handed back alive the child to his mother.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

How you burned, aflame with divine fire and zeal, O prophet, denouncing the king who wrought iniquities!

O most holy Theotokos, save us!

O pure one, who without seed conceived God, we entreat you ever to pray for your servants.

Katavasia: He who sits in glory upon the throne of the Godhead,* Jesus the true God, is come in a swift cloud* and with His sinless hands he has saved those who cry:* Glory to Your power, O Christ.

Ode 5

Irmos: O Lord, Bestower of light and Creator of the ages:* guide us in the light of Your commandments, for we know none other God than You!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

The Law of your fathers has shone you forth as a true man of prayer, O Elias, a wonderworker that transforms the nature of the elements and utterly consumes the righteous sacrifice with water.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

As you are a true minister of God, you utterly put to shame the prophets of abominable shame, O venerable and most blessed Elias, clearly marking the power of the Trinity.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

Rendering priestly service through the word of grace, O Elias, you slew the shameful priests with your blameless hands, consumed with zeal as with fire.

O most holy Theotokos, save us!

To you that gave birth to Christ, the Creator of all, we cry out: Rejoice, O pure one! Rejoice, you that have shone forth the Light upon us! Rejoice, you that contained the infinite God!

Katavasia: The whole world was amazed* at your divine glory:* for you, O Virgin who have not known wedlock,* have held in your womb the God of all* and have given birth to an eternal Son,* who rewards with salvation all who sing your praises.

Ode 6

Irmos: The uttermost abyss of offenses has surrounded me, O Lord,* but lead up my life from corruption, as You did the prophet Jonah, O Lord.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

You were a pillar of piety and the pure life, an instiller of purity, and an emulator of the angels, O wondrous God-bearer Elias.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

The wrath of the prophet-slaying woman, having frightened you who had received the power to bind and loose the flow of the rains, O wondrous Elias, causes you to flee.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

Having knelt down, you raised on high the supremely exalted eye of your mind, by your eminent entreaty causing the rains to be loosed; and with showers you watered the furrows of the earth.

O most holy Theotokos save us!

The bush on Sinai, which drew nigh to the Fire without being consumed, prefigured you, the Ever-virgin Mother, O all-hymned Theotokos Mary.

Katavasia: As we celebrate* this sacred and solemn feast of the Mother of God,* let us come, clapping our hands, O people of the Lord,* and give glory to God who was born of her.

Kontakion, Tone 2

O prophet and seer of the mighty works of our God,* Elias greatly renowned,* by your word, you stopped the rain clouds.* Pray for us to the only One who loves mankind.

Ikos

Beholding the great iniquity of men and the great love of God for mankind, the prophet Elias was troubled and grew angry; and he addressed pitiless words to the Merciful One, crying out: Be angered against them that deny You, O righteous Judge! But he did not move the compassion of the Good One to torment them that deny Him, for He that alone loves mankind ever awaits the repentance of all.

Ode 7

Irmos: The fiery bush on the mountain and the Chaldean furnace drenched with dew* clearly prefigured you, O Bride of God;* for you received the divine and immaterial Fire in your material womb* without being consumed.* Therefore, we chant to Him that was born of you:* Blessed are You, O God of our fathers!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

Most gloriously vested with divine and formidable power, you undertook a long journey, having eaten of food that sufficed you for forty days, O wondrous Elias. Therefore, you said on Horeb: Blessed is the God of our fathers!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

The mild and gentle breeze showed the Lord to you, O Elias, who was zealous for God Almighty: not the wind of the tempest, nor the earthquake, nor yet the fearsome fire. Therefore, to meek Jesus you chanted: Blessed are You, O God of our fathers!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

Like the great Moses, you were vouchsafed the vision of God and prophecy, O wondrous Elias, anointing prophets and kings with the Spirit. And having borne witness to the glory of Christ on Tabor, you chanted: Blessed are You, O God of our fathers!

O most holy Theotokos save us!

In times past you supernaturally and without seed gave birth in the flesh to the unoriginate and pre-eternal Lord, the Son, Power and Wisdom of the Father, O all-pure one, to the renovation of mortals. Therefore, we cry out to Him that was born of you: Blessed is the God of our fathers!

Katavasia: The holy children bravely trampled upon the threatening fire,* refusing to worship created things in place of the Creator,* and they sang in joy:* Blessed are You and praised above all, O Lord God of our Fathers.

Ode 8

Irmos: The undefiled bodies of the pious youths,* sharing the same raiment as their souls, trembled with awe,* and the unrelenting fire, fed with boundless fuel, drew back.* But as the ever-living flame cooled,* the chanting of an everlasting hymn began:* Hymn the Lord, all you works, and exalt Him supremely for all ages!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

Well did Ahab find the just destruction of his house, through the prophet’s condemnation, to be the dread retribution for his vile commission of murder. And with fiery mind the Tishbite chanted a hymn to the Bestower of Life: All you works of the Lord, hymn and supremely exalt Him for all ages!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

Fire rained down from heaven for you, O Elias, twice consuming captains of fifty, in that you are God’s chosen minister; for to Him that controls everlasting life you in godly manner declaimed the hymn: All you works of the Lord, hymn and supremely exalt Him for all ages!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

On Tabor Christ showed you to be an initiate of the mystery of His divine incarnation, as you were an instiller of purity and a most divine offshoot of virginity, showing the unapproachable light of the Godhead in His Body to you that cries out: All you works of the Lord, hymn and supremely exalt Him for all ages!

O most holy Theotokos save us!

Most rich was the womb of the Mother of God; for, having received the Word in the coarseness of the flesh and wrought therefrom a form earthly according to hypostasis, it was shown to be the city of God wherein the Most High was well-pleased to live. To Him do we chant: All you works of the Lord, hymn and supremely exalt Him for all ages!

Katavasia: The Offspring of the Theotokos saved the holy children in the furnace.* He who was then prefigured has since been born on earth,* and He gathers all the creation to sing:* O all you works of the Lord, bless the Lord and exalt Him above all for ever.

Ode 9

Irmos: O blessed and most pure Theotokos, who ineffably gave flesh to God,* the Beacon which shone forth before the sun* and has come to us through your virginal womb:* we magnify you!

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

Having lived on earth the course which man cannot change, and crossed the Jordan’s stream by means of his mantle, the Tishbite, that air-borne charioteer, made a strange and heaven-traversing journey in the Spirit.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

The Tishbite, aflame with the zeal of piety, was taken up on a fiery chariot; and he let drop his mantle; and Elisha, robed therein, received divine grace which he could not conceal.

O glorious prophet Elias, pray to God for us!

The Tishbite and Moses the God-seer beheld in revelation on Tabor what eye has not seen, nor ear heard, and what has not entered into the hearts of earth-born men: the Lord Almighty, incarnate.

O most holy Theotokos save us!

O Theotokos, we magnify you, who removed the severe condemnation which was of old the correction of our first mother, and who are ever the reconciliation of our race to God, a bridge to the Creator.

Katavasia: Let every mortal born on earth,* radiant with light, in spirit leap for joy;* and let the host of the angelic powers* celebrate and honour the holy feast of the Mother of God,* and let them cry:* Rejoice! Pure and blessed Ever-Virgin, who gave birth to God.

Small Litany

Hymn of Light

Podoben “O immutable Light…”

The Light who showed you to be a charioteer traversing the sky on a fiery chariot drawn by four steeds, O Elias, did not consume you utterly; for with your fiery tongue you drew fire down and dried it up with showers.

Glory…

You were caught up on a fiery chariot to the circles of heaven; whence looking down, as you are close to the Light, grant noetic light to us that now celebrate your holy memory with faith.

Now…

You were the author of the blessings bestowed by God on the world, O Theotokos. And now entreat the easily-placated God for the salvation of all.

Praises

Stichera of the Praises

Tone 8, Podoben “What shall we call you…”

To carry out the sentence pre-ordained:* this honour is for all His faithful.

O wondrous prophet, when you united yourself to God by your pure life of virtue,* and had received dominion thereby, you traversed creation in mind,* by your will you shut up the portals of the rain, called down fire from on high, and destroyed the enemy.* Pray that our souls be saved.

Praise God in His holy places, praise Him in His mighty heavens.

Aflame with zeal for the Lord, you openly denounced the iniquitous king,* and zealously put to death the shameless priests,* kindling fire amid the water, O blessed one.* And you were a source of food not produced by cultivation,* and with your mantle parted the waters of the Jordan.* Pray that our souls be saved.

Praise Him for His powerful deeds,* praise His surpassing greatness.

O prophet, when you showed forth on earth a life which was truly heavenly,* enriched by the hypostatic Life within you,* you resurrected a dead boy by your breath;* and you remained apart from death for many years,* for you sat upon a fiery chariot and was raised up to the Highest.* Pray that our souls be saved.

Tone 1

O praise Him with sound of trumpet,* praise Him with lute and harp;

The zealous Elias, ruler over the passions,* has today been taken up in the air,* the initiate of the mysteries and the inaugurator of universal salvation.* O precious glory, which the heaven-traversing prophet has been vouchsafed!* O eminent adornment of the prophets!* For, lo! by his reproofs he showed himself to be an angel in the flesh and an incorporeal man.* Praising him, let us say:* Help us, O wise one, on the day of Judgment!

Praise Him with timbrel and dance,* praise Him with strings and pipes.

With spiritual songs let us all praise the prophets of Christ:* for Elias the Tishbite became a traverser of the heavens,* and through his mantle Elisha received a double measure of grace from God;* and they have been shown to be radiant beacons to the whole world,* praying ceaselessly in behalf of our souls.

O praise Him with resounding cymbals, praise Him with clashing of cymbals.* Let everything that lives and that breathes give praise to the Lord.

O you faithful, like David let us honour with hymns today the prophet of the Lord,* Elias the Tishbite, the most splendid zealot.* For, behold by his speech he shut heaven like a curtain* and rendered the fertile earth barren.* O most glorious wonder!* A man of earth does not permit the heavens to rain!* O wonder! A corruptible man is clothed in incorruption,* and has ascended to the heavens on a fiery chariot;* and by his mantle he bestows a double measure of grace upon Elisha,* and denounces the king, and destroys the disobedient people with famine.* He put to shame all the shameful priests,* and raised up the widow’s son from the dead by his word.* Through his supplications, O Christ our God,* preserve all the right-believing Orthodox Christians in peace,* granting them the triumph of victory over their enemies.

Tone 8, Glory…

O you faithful, let us honour in song the chiefs among the prophets,* the most radiant beacons of the whole world: Elias and Elisha.* And let us joyously cry out to Christ:* O compassionate Lord, through the supplications of Your prophets,* grant Your people remission of sins and great mercy.

Tone 8, Now…

O Mistress, accept the supplications of your servants,* and deliver us from all want and grief.
