nAT VESPERS ON THURSDAY EVENING\nKathisma Reading\n\nThere no appointed ps
alms for this evening.\n\nAt Psalm 140\n\nTone 1\n\nIf You mark iniquities
\, Lord\, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be reve
red.\n\nAs You ascended into the heavens\, from where You also descended\,
 * leave us not orphaned\, O Lord\;* let Your Spirit come\, bringing peace
to the world\;* show to the sons of men the works of Your might\,* O Lord
and Lover of mankind.\n\nI have waited for You as You have commanded\; my
soul patiently relies on Your promise\,* for it has trusted in the Lord.\n
\nThough You were not parted from His uncircumscribable bosom\,* You ascen
ded to Your beginningless Father\, O Christ\,* and the hosts on high accep
ted no addition to the thrice-holy praise.* But even after You became man
they recognized You as the one Son\,* only-begotten of the Father\, O Lord
.* In the multitude of Your compassions\, have mercy on us.\n\nFrom the mo
rning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.\n\nYour Angels said
to the Apostles\, O Lord:* O men of Galilee\, why do you stand looking up
into heaven?* This is Christ God\, who has been taken up from you into He
aven.* He shall come again in the manner you have seen Him going into Heav
en.* Worship Him in holiness and righteousness.\n\nTone 6\n\nFor with the
Lord there is mercy\, and with Him there is plentiful redemption\;* and He
shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.\n\nExtending all your desire
to God\, you forsook the beauty of the world as fleeting\,* and offered y
ourself to Christ\, O most wise Pachomius\,* purifying yourself in every w
ay by abstinence\,* showing forth patience opposition to the burning of th
e passions\;* and enduring the torment of your conscience\, O divinely wis
e one\,* you received an imperishable crown as one victorious.\n\nPraise t
he Lord\, all the nations\;* proclaim His glory\, all you people.\n\nThrou
gh active vision you have now drawn nigh to union with God\,* casting from
you the coarse covering of the body\,* having rejected the passionate att
achment of the flesh* and become illuminated by His effulgence and grace a
nd divine radiance\,* and deified at His behest\,* that you might ascend t
o that which is higher.* And having now become blessed\, O God-bearer\,* e
ntreat Christ with boldness in behalf of our souls.\n\nStrong is the love
of the Lord for us\;* eternally will His truth endure.\n\nHaving surpassed
every sense\, you conversed with the Master in purity\,* transcending the
flesh\, O most honoured Pachomius\,* restraining the passions with higher
thought\,* and destroying the arrogance of the demons\, you trampled them
underfoot.* And dwelling now in the mansions of heaven\,* be mindful of a
ll who honour your memory\,* entreating Christ with boldness in behalf of
our souls.\n\nGlory…\n\nHaving preserved unharmed that which was created
according to the image of God\,* and through fasting made your mind maste
r over the pernicious passions\,* you ascended\, as far as you were able\,
to that which is in accordance with His likeness\;* for having manfully d
one violence to your nature\,* you strove to make that which is worse subj
ect to that which is better\,* and to enslave the flesh to the spirit.* Th
erefore\, you have been shown to be the summit of monastics\,* a desert-dw
eller\, a trainer of those who run the good race\,* a most excellent model
of virtue.* And now in the heavens\, the reflections having been abolishe
d\, O our father Pachomius\,* you gaze in purity upon the Holy Trinity\,*
praying directly for those who honour you with faith and love.\n\nTone 2\,
Now…\n\nYou were born as you willed\;* Your appeared of Your own choice
\;* You suffered in the flesh\, O our God.* You arose from the dead\, tram
pling down death\;* and You ascended in glory\, O You who fills all things
\,* and sent to us the Divine Spirit\,* that we may praise and glorify You
r Divinity.\n\nGreat Prokeimenon\n\nTone 7\n\nOur God is in the heavens an
d on earth\;* He does whatever He wills.\n\nverse: When Israel came forth
from Egypt\; Jacob’s sons from an alien people.\n\nverse: The sea fled a
t the sight\; the Jordan turned back on its course.\n\nverse: Why was it\,
  sea\, that you fled\; that you turned back\, Jordan\, on your course?\n\n
Aposticha\n\nTone 2\n\nAs they went up to Olivet\,* He that fills all thin
gs then spoke to His disciples saying:* O My friends\, the time of My asce
nt draws nigh.* Go forth to every nation* and teach that which you have he
ard me speak.* Then the Lord ascended in glory as upon a chariot.* Whereup
on\, the Apostles trembled and were seized with awe.\n\nClap your hands\,
all nations\;* shout to God with a voice of rejoicing.\n\nWhen Your Mother
with the disciples* travelled with You\, O Christ on the way to Bethany.*
You raised up Your hands to bless them\,* and having blessed them\, a clo
ud of light came and took You from their sight.* Thus You ascended in glor
y* and take Your seat at the right hand of the Father\,* where with Him Yo
u are truly worshiped.\n\nGod is gone up in jubilation\,* the Lord with th
e voice of the trumpet.\n\nCome\, O you faithful\, let us go now together
to the summit of the Mount of Olives\,* that together with the apostolic c
hoir\,* we may lift up our hearts and minds toward the heavens\,* where we
shall see the Lord being carried aloft.* Therefore\, with heartfelt thank
sgiving\, let us all rejoice and cry aloud:* Glory be to Your Ascension\,
 O greatly Merciful One.\n\nTone 6\, Glory… \n\nO venerable father\, the
sound of your corrections has gone forth into all the earth\;* therefore\,
you have found the reward of your labours in the heavens\,* have destroye
d hordes of the demons and attained to the ranks of the angels\,* whose li
fe you blamelessly emulated.* As you have boldness before Christ God\, ask
peace for our souls.\n\nNow…\n\nHaving beheld Your ascents on the holy
 mountains\, O Christ\,* O effulgence of the Father’s glory\,* we praise
the radiant likeness of Your countenance.* We worship Your passion\,* we h
