Abstention from meat and foods that contain meat.
VESPERS ON THURSDAY EVENING
Kathisma Reading
The appointed psalms are chanted.
At Psalm 140
At Psalm 140
Tone 8
If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.
O divinely wise father Timothy,* by great, abstinence and frequent prayer* you utterly destroyed the movements of the passions;* and receiving the grace of dispassion,* you were shown to be a receptacle of the divine Spirit.* As you live even after death, O divinely blessed one,* you ever drive away evil spirits.
I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.
O divinely wise father Timothy,* you were a true emulator of Abraham,* everywhere healing them that have recourse to you.* In your pangs you acquired the strength of Job;* and, possessing the meekness of David,* on earth you lived a life equal to that of the angels,* and have received your ultimate desire, praying for us all.
From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.
O divinely wise father Timothy,* you were shown to be a model of chastity, an example of abstinence,* an image of piety, and a wellspring of compunction,* an unshakable foundation of orthodoxy, an ever-flowing stream of healings,* a never-setting sun, a child of divine grace, and the adornment of monastics,* O all-honoured one.
Tone 8
For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.
Possessed of a heavenly life, you were truly ordained by God to serve as a priest,* and with a pure mind you offered up the services to Him.* Misfortunes and suffering you endured, O blessed one,* for the sake of the divine preaching and the steadfast truth* which you confirmed by your words,* manifestly denouncing the mindless ones.
Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.
With the word of your sacred discourse* you manifestly set afire the tinder of the blasphemy of the impious Arius,* who did not comprehend that the Father and the Son* are called equal in honour by nature, O most sacred Eustathius;* and you enlightened the hearts of the faithful* and kept with truth* them that with faith celebrate your memory.
Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.
Wielding the staff of your words, O most sacred shepherd,* you preserved the rational flock of God unharmed therewith from all manner of wolves.* The good Shepherd has led you into the fold of heaven,* where the souls of the elect and righteous fathers are,* O God-bearing and all-blessed Eustathius.
Tone 8, Glory… Now…
The ewe-lamb, when she beheld the Lamb* stretched out of His own will upon the tree of the Cross,* cried out, maternally in pain, with lamentation:* What is this strange sight, O my Son?* How is it that You die, O Longsuffering One,* who as Lord grants life to all, bestowing resurrection upon mortals?* I glorify Your great condescension, O my God!
Prokeimenon, Tone 6
My help is from the Lord,* Who made heaven and earth.
verse: I lifted up my eyes to the mountains, from where my help shall come.
Aposticha
Tone 6
Your Cross is the life and help of Your people, О Lord;* and trusting therein, we hymn You,* our God who was crucified in the flesh.* Have mercy on us!
I have lifted up my eyes to You enthroned in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord our God until He has mercy on us.
Your Cross, О Lord, has opened paradise to the race of mankind;* and delivered from corruption, we hymn You, our God who was crucified in the flesh.* Have mercy on us!
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for we have been filled with shame; our soul is all too full of the mockery of the rich, of the contempt of the proud.
Your martyrs, О Lord, did not deny You nor depart from Your commandments.* By their supplications have mercy on us.
Glory… Now…
Standing with the virginal disciple before the Tree during the crucifixion,* the Virgin cried out, weeping:* “Woe is me! How is it that You suffer, O Christ,* since You are the dispassion of all?”
Troparia
Tone 4
O God of our fathers,* You always deal with us according to your everlasting compassion,* take not your mercy away from us;* but through the prayers of our fathers,* guide our lives along the ways of peace.
Glory… Now…
O Virgin, all immaculate Mother of Christ God,* a sword pierced your all-holy soul* when you saw your Son and God willingly crucified.* Therefore, O blessed One,* never cease to pray to Him* that He may grant us forgiveness of our sins.
DIVINE LITURGY ON FRIDAY MORNING
Troparia and Kontakia
Troparion, Tone 4: The truth of your deeds made you for your flock a rule of faith* and an image of meekness,* a teacher of continence.* And so you gained the heights through humility,* riches through poverty,* father and bishop, Timothy.* Intercede with Christ, our God,* for the salvation of our souls.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen.
Kontakion, Tone 2: O thunder of justice, spiritual trumpet,* planter of faith and destroyer of heresies,* servant of the Trinity, great hierarch Timothy,* forever standing in the company of the angels,* pray without ceasing for all of us.
